The Free Radical - Swetha Subbiah

Category : Awards

September is a season for all the wild ones. Wildflowers blooming in the country, wild greens popping up along bylanes of our cities, like radicals, just daring to break free. Wild and free is what September feels like and look at the serendipity of it all, when our co-founder Swetha Subbiah travelled all the way from Bangalore, India to Los Angeles, USA, to receive The Free Radical Award by Run Tech Club.

The Run Tech Club is a community that in their words “would rather brainstorm in sneakers than a suit.” They are game changers in genres of culture, technology, and entertainment, and are doing this by making sports a medium for access, to entrepreneurs, creators and athletes, and anyone who dares to run with their dreams.

The twain came together with many more brilliant minds at the RTC Gala 2023 - an Award Show and Art Exhibition that aimed to accelerate access for emerging entrepreneurs, creatives, and athletes through the impact of sports. It was a celebration of over 120+ founders, RTC Fellows, Top VCs, Pro-Sports organizations, and athletes.

Swetha shared the stage with Kara Nortman - Angel City FC, Kyle Merber - Citius Mag, Martin Muoto - Sola Impact, and many more fellow honorees.

Swetha received the Free Radical Award at the RTC Gala 2023 for deconstructing constructs to benefit humanity. In her acceptance speech, she tapped into her deeper thoughts and feelings, and shared, “It's a bit overwhelming when a girl from India, who just wanted to kick a ball around with other girls, is flying to LA to receive an award for it.

Sisters in Sweat is the product of blood sweat, tears, a few broken bones, and the incredible spirit of women who are part of the community. We started with 15 girls and now we are close to 6000 women strong, playing multiple sports including football, and basketball and we have a run club as well. It takes more than one person to build a community obviously, so I accept this award on behalf of my co-founder Tanvie Hans, who’s a professional footballer, who’s given up many opportunities to play in the sport that she loves, to help build this community.

I thank my incredible team, who are there every day, to inject the Sisters in Sweat spirit into each and every one of our sessions. Of course I thank the women of the community, it's because of them that we continue to grow. I thank family and friends who support what we do. I also want to give a special shout out to James, he really has been a guardian angel, to me and to Sisters in Sweat, enabling opportunities, and last but not the least, I want to thank Darius and the team here at Run Tech Club for recognising the work we do, and injecting that little bit of gasoline in me, to just keep going. Thank you so much.”

Everyone at Team SIS is so thrilled and proud of this milestone, especially our co-founder and international football player Tanvie Hans. In her very own overwhelmed words, “For someone who usually loves being the centre of attention, when it comes to moments like these, where she’s appreciated publicly for the work she’s done, and the impact she’s created, she’s one of the most selfless people I know. (in such moments)She won’t take any credit and will give it all generously to the other people involved. (the)Truth is, having her name attached to a project like Sisters In Sweat, just elevates it to new heights, and helps our vision get recognised on International platforms such as RTC. I couldn’t be more proud of her, and what we (us and the team) have been able to build with this community. My heart is so full!”

And with that heart so full of awe and all that gasoline injected in our spirits, team Sisters in Sweat is so charged to take on the next quarter, with access to new sporting opportunities for our sisters.
