“She knew, she always knew,
She was built for big things,
Bigger than public opinion
And sparkly rings”
- Tanvie Hans
A footballer, a poet, an entrepreneur - that's Tanvie Hans for you. Training across cities, across countries, with boys her age, Tanvie Hans had set her goals to play as an elite footballer early on. Discipline, focus, consistent training and a clear goal from a young age, led her to become an Indian-born British professional footballer.
Growing up in Delhi, her journey with football started back in school. She went on to play for her college team at Jesus and Mary and for the state as well. She was called for the u - 19 team, which was in Gwalior at that time, and did pretty well. But because she is a British passport holder, she couldn’t go on to play for India. She went on to do her masters in England and played for the university team, which was her 1st exposure to international football.
Over the years, Tanvie has played at state and national levels for many years. Among her many achievements, she is one of the few Indian born, British professional footballers, who has played for English clubs Tottenham Hotspurs and Fulham. Since moving to Bangalore, Tanvie has captained the Karnataka state team twice, played for Parikrma for 4 seasons, and 2 seasons with Misaka FC in the Karnataka Women’s league, played for Bangalore United Football Club at the Indian Women’s League (IWL) for 2 consecutive seasons.
Just as she was making her way through building a career in football in India, here came a twist in the tale. Swetha Subbiah, fitness coach and one of the few Nike certified trainers in India, dragged her to a party and introduced her to a bunch of friends. Schonalli, one of the gang they were hanging out with, requested for a women’s football session amongst friends, and little did they know that that’s what would lead to the initiation of what Sisters in Sweat is today.
As co-founder of Sisters in Sweat, Tanvie has her day full of the SiS vibe. Between working on creatives for social media to coordinating meetings between team members, to coaching a group of women over the weekend, the hands-on approach she has towards everything she does, reflects in the strong community culture that she and Swetha have built over the past six years.
When asked to reflect upon her journey so far, she says, “It’s beautiful to see the impact that our community has had, at levels that I could not have imagined. The women are directly being affected physically, mentally, emotionally and they have a support system, we get to hear these stories from them directly, which is so gratifying. Some of them have kids, and the kids are picking up sports, the ecosystem around them is changing, just because they are a part of our community and now have access to sport. And I think that impact is far deeper, far greater and last generations. So I’m just very proud of the difference it is making.”
When asked about her vision for her personal football journey and SiS, Tanvie Shared, “I feel I am in top form now. Even though I’m the oldest player who played in the Karnataka Women’s League, I think my fitness levels are at their peak and I will continue to train. I’ll be taking a year’s break from professional football so as to take the time to boost Sisters in Sweat to two new cities. We are in a crucial growth spurt now and our vision is to grow Sisters in Sweat pan India.
